Learning is the process of acquiring new, or modifying existing, , , , , or . The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals, and some ; there is also evidence for some kind of learning in certain plants. Some learning is immediate, induced by a single event (e.g. being burned by a hot stove), but much skill and knowledge accumulates from repeated experiences. The changes induced by learning often last a lifetime, and it is hard to distinguish learned material that seems to be “lost” from that which cannot be retrieved.

Humans learn before birth and continue until death as a consequence of ongoing interactions between people and their environment. The nature and processes involved in learning are studied in many fields, including , , , and . Research in such fields has led to the identification of various sorts of learning. For example, learning may occur as a result of , or , or as a result of more complex activities such as , seen only in relatively intelligent animals. Learning may occur or without conscious awareness. Learning that an aversive event can’t be avoided nor escaped may result in a condition called . There is evidence for human behavioral learning , in which has been observed as early as 32 weeks into , indicating that the is sufficiently developed and primed for learning and to occur very early on in .
Play has been approached by several theorists as the first form of learning. 1. Discuss and contrast extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation. Give an example of each type of motivation from your personal experience.
2. Describe Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Provide an example of a deficiency need overpowering the need for growth.

Give an example of a time you were not able to perform well on a difficult task (a race, a test, etc.). Analyze 2 attributions you made about the situation in terms of locus, stability, and controllability. Explain your answers.
4. List and define the 7 motivational strategies that are listed in the mnemonic TARGETS. Select 3 of these strategies and give an example of how a teacher would incorporate each into classroom practice to motivate students.
