Often, you will find that multiple assessment tools are designed to measure the same condition or response. Not all tools, however, are appropriate for use in all clinical situations. You must consider the strengths and weaknesses of each tool to select the appropriate assessment tool for your client. For this Discussion, as you examine the assessment tool assigned to you by the Course Instructor, consider its use in psychotherapy.

Communication is essential in ensuring psychiatric patients’ well-being (Donner & Wiklund, 2021). I have experienced cases where a treatment plan was inadequately developed due to a poor relationship between a patient and the medical practitioner. A good relationship facilitates data collection, organization, differential diagnosis, and treatment plans. Patients express themselves better when they feel that the healthcare worker is friendly, approachable, and ready to listen. You have highlighted the importance of patients speaking for themselves. In my work area, patients who give details on their chief complaint reveal information that a caregiver, family, or friend would have otherwise not shared.
Medical practitioners must conduct a psychiatric interview covering therapeutic activities, complementary and alternative medicines, over-the-counter medications, mental status, psychiatric history, and behavioral observation. Patients and their loved ones tend to read a lot of information on the internet has a lot on the management of mental health by using alternative and complementary medicines such as yoga, meditation, and prayer (Wemrell et al., 2020). The myths surrounding antipsychotics, antidepressants, and other mental health drugs discourage patients from seeking hospital solutions. I have witnessed several cases of relapse or reoccurrence caused by non-compliance. Patients must be advised on the importance of strictly following their regimen and attending hospital reviews.
Medical practitioners are encouraged to use rating scales and guidelines in making a diagnosis (Setkowski et al., 2021). Scales such as NICH Vanderbilt Assessment Scale for children with ADHD help in assessing signs and symptoms, patients’ behavior, and making a diagnosis. I recommend that hospital managers organize continuous medical education and training for medical practitioners to learn the latest guidelines and evidence-based practice.
